1,500 PARTICIPANTS ENLIVEN ILCD PROGRAMME TRADITIONAL GAMES COMPETITION
IPOH, 26 APRIL 2026 – The spirit of unity, urban sustainability and local cultural heritage were clearly exhibited when 1,500 participants gathered to make the Traditional Games Competition a success in conjunction with the 86th Edition of the Ipoh Low Carbon Day (ILCD) Programme. This monthly programme has been ongoing since October 2015.
The event was officiated by MBI Councillor Clr. Twoon Kok Kay. Also present were MBI Councillor Clr. Ahmad Shafiq Ahmad Ariffin, MBI Town Planning Director Zainal Abdul Hamid and MBI Doughnut Economy City Secretariat Unit Head TPr. Dr. Zulqarnain Mohamad.
The programme, from 7.00 am to 10.00 am, aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle, strengthen community relations and encourage public participation in traditional activities in line with the sustainable urban development agenda.
The presence of participants from various age groups proved the community’s strong support for the smart city development initiative that is inclusive, community-friendly and based on sustainability.
Among the games contested were batu seremban, congkak, tuju selipar, sepak bulu ayam and baling bantal dalam bakul. These traditional events not only evoked nostalgic memories, but also fostered the spirit of teamwork, community bonding and appreciation for local cultural heritage.
At the same time, the programme also integrated low-carbon elements by encouraging participants to walk to the event location and reduce the use of single-use plastics throughout the programme.
The ILCD programme is a strategic initiative towards transforming urban areas into greener, more efficient and smarter environments through active community participation in physical, social and environmentally positive activities.
The organisation of this traditional games competition demonstrates that smart city and environmental sustainability agendas can move in tandem with efforts to preserve local cultural heritage, thereby strengthening the identity of the Ipoh city community.
