MBI STRENGTHENS SAFETY IN JELAPANG TOWN VIA IMPLEMENTATION OF CCTV SYSTEM UNDER THE SAFE CITY PROGRAMME 2025

IPOH, 3 FEBRUARY 2026 – Ipoh City Council (MBI) today conducted the CCTV System Testing and Handover Session for the Blackspot Area Recovery Action Plan under the Safe City Programme 2025 in Jelapang Town, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen urban community safety.

The session started with a speech by City Secretary Ahmad Munir Ishak, who emphasised MBI’s commitment to implementing a data-based approach and strategic cooperation among various agencies to address public safety issues holistically and effectively. This was followed by a presentation on the Safe City Programme 2025 Completion Report by Urban Planning Assistant Director Anis Zulaikha Ahmad Kamal and Public Works Senior Assistant Director Izdihar Niszar Syafiq Sarlan.

Also present at the CCTV System Testing and Handover Session were Jelapang Assemblyman Cheah Pou Hian and MBI Councillor Twoon Kok Kay.

Based on an analysis of index crime statistics from 2020 to 2025, Jelapang Town was identified as one of the high-risk areas, thus requiring more structured intervention via the implementation of smart monitoring technology. In this regard, the installation of the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system is seen as a proactive and strategic step in supporting crime prevention efforts.

The CCTV system installed includes high-definition visual monitoring, strategic location coverage and continuous recording capabilities that enable more systematic surveillance. The system also serves as a support for enforcement actions, investigations and rapid response by MBI and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

In addition, the session involved a technical briefing and a preview of the CCTV system’s functions and applications, to ensure comprehensive understanding of the system’s capabilities, operational readiness level and compliance with the technical specifications set.

The implementation of this system was the result of close cooperation between the Ipoh City Council, Royal Malaysia Police, Perak Anti-Drug Agency, Perak Immigration Department, Perak Welfare Department, technical agencies and local community representatives, including the Perak Malay Hawkers and Small Traders Association (Kinta District Branch).

The Ipoh City Council is confident that the implementation of this CCTV system will contribute to reducing crime risks, increasing the sense of safety among residents and traders, and strengthening public confidence in urban safety management.

The successful implementation in Jelapang Town will also serve as a benchmark for the expansion of the Safe City Programme to other areas in Ipoh City in the future.

This initiative is in line with the aspiration of Ipoh Smart and Prosperous City, for the well-being and quality of life of city residents.
