ICC WALKABLE CITY WILL REALISE DEVELOPMENT OF WALKABLE IPOH CONCEPT IN THE CITY CENTRE AREA IN 2030

IPOH A LOW CARBON CITY 2030

IPOH A LOW CARBON CITY 2030

Ipoh City Council (ICC) is currently in the phase to begin the implementation of Ipoh Towards a Low Carbon City and Walkable City 2030 where these two documents are components of the ICC Strategic Planning Plan. The implementation of Low Carbon City is in the Central Planning Area which has been identified as a Low Carbon Zone area in line with the requirements of LCC2030C by the MGTC which stipulates that each city must have at least one low carbon zone.

ICC intends to make Ipoh a Low Carbon City in line with the aspirations of the Malaysian Government which wants to see all 154 Local Authorities (PBTs) throughout Malaysia implement initiatives towards a Low Carbon City. The main goal of this initiative is to reduce the intensity of carbon emissions nationwide in line with the government's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030. Accordingly, the preparation of the Ipoh Low Carbon City Action Plan will determine implementation strategies and targets in making Ipoh City a Low Carbon City.

ICC WALKABLE CITY WILL REALISE DEVELOPMENT OF WALKABLE IPOH CONCEPT IN THE CITY CENTRE AREA IN 2030

ICC will develop the Ipoh City Centre area based on the concept of Walkable Ipoh by providing complete facilities that are comfortable and safe for pedestrians and cyclists. The City Centre area covers the Ipoh Old Town, Ipoh New Town and the Greentown development areas. The Walkable Ipoh programme is expected to become a reality in 2030. The selection of areas to implement Walkable Ipoh is based on various existing tourist attractions, commercial, public facilities and institutions in the area. Hence, it is a crowded area, especially during peak hours and public holidays.

The provision of comfortable and safe pedestrian and cycling lane facilities as a mode of movement can reduce congestion in the area with a travel time of only 15 minutes between the centres of attraction. The Walkable Ipoh development concept will provide inclusive facilities comprising pedestrian paths, bicycle lanes, wheelchair access facilities, micro mobility and continuous bus facilities in line with the theme of a Healthy Walkable City. Facilities like this are expected to be able to address the impact of the urban heat island and improve its environment quality as a result of reducing carbon emissions and subsequently achieve the status of Ipoh as a low carbon city.

The Walkable Ipoh Plan was launched simultaneously with the ICC Strategic Plan 2030 and the Ipoh Low Carbon City Action Plan 2030 which was officiated by Perak Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Saarani bin Mohamad.
