SAFE CITY RIDE & RUN FOR A DECADE ENLIVEN IPOH LOW CARBON DAY JUN 2025
IPOH, 22 JUN 2025 – The 80th Ipoh Low Carbon Day (ILCD) for June was held in a lively atmosphere with the participation of over 1,200 participants in two main events – Safe City Ride 2025 and Run For A Decade – in conjunction with the Ipoh City 37th anniversary celebration this year.
The Safe City Ride 2025 event, jointly-organised by PlanMalaysia and National Security Council (MKN) under the Safe City Programme 2025 initiative, drew 450 participants from throughout the country, including from Johor and Perlis. Also participating were representatives from government agencies and Local Authorities, such as PDRM, MBPP, MBAS, as well as local cycling clubs and individual participants.
The 20KM ride traversed strategic routes around Ipoh, including Pekan Baru, Pekan Lama and Bandar Baru Sunway in Tambun, thus promoting urban safety and well-being. Participants also had the chance to win lucky draw prizes totalling RM4,000 in cash.
Meanwhile, the 5KM Run For A Decade was held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Ipoh Low Carbon Day programme, formerly known as Ipoh Car Free Day. A total of 800 participants from within and outside of Ipoh took part in the run. Lucky draw prizes were also offered to the runners as a token of appreciation for their support.
For this edition, the chosen theme was "International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking", in line with the commemoration date recognised by the United Nations (UN) on 26 June every year. This theme aligned with the organisation of Safe City Ride, which emphasised aspects of crime prevention and drug abuse in the community.
Also making the programme a success were the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), in collaboration with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF), which set up an exhibition and public awareness booth at the event venue.
Drug abuse, declared the nation's main enemy since 1983, remains a serious issue to this day. Statistics show that nearly 80% of drug addicts are among youths aged between 18 and 40, who are an important workforce group for the country's future.
This ILCD programme is expected to raise public awareness about the dangers of drugs and the importance of a healthy lifestyle through recreational and community activities. It also aims to promote healthy interactions across ethnicities and generations in the effort to curb negative influences on society.
The official flag-off ceremony for both events was officiated by City Secretary Ahmad Munir Ishak, representing the Mayor of Ipoh, alongside MBI Chief Whip Clr. Wong Kar Keat, Education Enterprise & Public Sector Business Sector Head Kamal Hisham Kamaruddin, and TIME DotCom representative Migawati Ismail.
The programme also received sponsorship and support from the Perak State Government, TIME DotCom and Olligo.
