FUKUOKA–IPOH SISTER CITY YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAMME STRENGTHENS INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP TIES
IPOH, 7 AUGUST 2026 – Ipoh City Council (MBI) continues to strengthen the bonds of friendship between the cities of Ipoh and Fukuoka, Japan through the Fukuoka–Ipoh Sister City Youth Exchange Programme, which serves as an important platform for enhancing cultural understanding, knowledge sharing and people-to-people ties between the two cities.
A total of eight youth delegates from Fukuoka City, together with three accompanying officers, were feted at a Welcome Dinner for the Fukuoka–Ipoh Sister City Youth Exchange Programme at the Ipoh Convention Centre
The event was attended by City Councillor Clr. Zuraidah Zakaria, representing Ipoh Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah.
Also present were Delegation Head Motoi Tachibana, chaperones Akiko Kabemura and Kazuo Yoshimoto, MBI Heads of Departments, host families, teachers, coordinators, organising committee members and invited guests.
In her speech, Clr. Zuraidah described the exchange programme as an important platform for strengthening the long-standing friendship between Ipoh and Fukuoka, particularly through cooperation in education, culture and youth development.
According to her, such programmes provide valuable opportunities for the younger generation to learn about the cultures, traditions and ways of life of communities in both cities, besides exchanging views and building friendships that have the potential to last a lifetime.
“Youth are the future generation who will play a pivotal role in the development of their respective societies and countries. Through this programme, participants have the opportunity to experience Malaysian culture firsthand, gain new perspectives and forge friendships that will hopefully continue to inspire them after they return to their home country,” she said.
She also encouraged the young delegates from Fukuoka to make the most of every activity during their stay in Ipoh with an open mind, a sense of curiosity and a spirit of mutual respect.
At the same time, she expressed her appreciation to the host families who willingly opened their homes and welcomed the delegates as part of their families throughout the programme.
According to her, the experience of staying with host families gives the participants from Fukuoka the opportunity to gain a closer understanding of the daily lives, customs and family values of Malaysian society.
“The hospitality and friendliness extended by the host families are among the most important elements that make this programme truly meaningful. The relationships formed within a family often evolve into lasting friendships, reflecting the true spirit of international friendship,” she said.
During their stay in Ipoh, the delegates also had the opportunity to discover the uniqueness of the city’s heritage, the lives of its multiracial communities, the beauty of its natural environment, as well as to enjoy the variety of local cuisine, which is among Ipoh’s main attractions.
MBI hopes that the visit will provide a closer insight into Ipoh as a city that values creativity, sustainability and inclusivity, while continuing to preserve its historical treasures and cultural heritage.
Clr. Zuraidah also expressed her appreciation to the State Education Department (JPN), District Education Office (PPD), schools, officers, teachers, coordinators, host families and organising committee members for their commitment, planning and cooperation in making the programme a success.
MBI hopes that the delegates will take home fond memories, meaningful experiences, new friendships and a deeper understanding of Malaysia and Ipoh City.
The Fukuoka–Ipoh Sister City Youth Exchange Programme is hoped to continue serving as a platform that strengthens the ties between the two cities.
