MAYOR OF IPOH OFFICIATES MBI LEVEL MALAYSIA CLEANUP DAY 2026
IPOH, 26 SEPTEMBER 2026 – Ipoh Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah officiated the Ipoh City Council (MBI) level Malaysia Cleanup Day (HCM) 2026 at Medan Selera Dato’ Tahwil Azar in Ipoh this morning.
Also present to enliven the programme were MBI Chief Whip Dato’ Mazlan Abd. Rahman, City Secretary A’zman Mohd Harun, MBI Councillors and MBI Heads of Departments.
The programme, which began as early as 7.00am, was part of the World Cleanup Day celebration, held annually on 20 September as an effort to raise public awareness globally on the importance of public cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
In line with this aspiration, the government, through the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), organised Malaysia Cleanup Day (HCM): Mega Cleanup Programme in conjunction with World Cleanup Day, as a platform to mobilise society collectively in maintaining environmental cleanliness.
At the MBI level, the programme was implemented through a mega and integrated gotong-royong approach involving the public, government agencies, private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), institutions and strategic partners. The programme activities included area cleaning, waste management, recycling and efforts to raise public awareness of the 3R practices, i.e., Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
For this year's programme, MBI targeted the participation of 1,000 people, reflecting the Council's commitment to broadening community involvement in cleanliness and environmental sustainability activities.
The implementation of HCM 2026 also involved MBI's Circular Economy Strategic Partners as among the key supporters of the programme.
Their involvement is highly significant in strengthening the circular economy approach via waste separation, recycling, reuse of materials and reduction of waste sent to landfills.
For comparison, the implementation of MBI level HCM 2025 recorded the participation of 840 people. The programme was officiated by State Housing and Local Government Committee Chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching.
The implementation of HCM 2025 showed very encouraging impact, with a total of 60.79 metric tonnes of garden and bulk waste collected, in addition to 8.5 kilograms of e-waste and 37.5 kilograms of used cooking oil collected.
This achievement clearly demonstrates that community and strategic partner involvement plays an important role in ensuring the success of efforts to maintain city cleanliness and promote more responsible waste management.
Meanwhile, MBI emphasised that the Ipoh City Council By-Laws on the Collection, Removal and Disposal of Waste 2026 have been enforced by the Perak State Government starting this year. The enforcement of these by-laws is one of the important steps in strengthening solid waste management and ensuring that all waste generators carry out their respective responsibilities in an orderly and responsible manner.
For non-compliance parties, a maximum compound offer of RM1,000.00 will be issued as provided under the said by-laws.
MBI calls on all parties, including the community, industrial sector, business premises and institutions, to jointly take responsibility in ensuring that generated waste is managed and disposed of in accordance with the Council’s regulations. This approach is crucial to ensure city cleanliness is continuously maintained and reduce the risk of uncontrolled waste disposal.
Moreover, MBI wishes to stress that waste management and disposal are not the sole responsibility of the local authority, but require the cooperation and commitment of all parties, particularly owners or operators of industrial, commercial and institutional activities.
The implementation of HCM 2026 at Medan Selera Dato’ Tahwil Azar is hoped to serve as a platform to strengthen the spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility in ensuring that the city area remains clean, safe and comfortable to live in and visit.
MBI also calls on the entire community within the Ipoh city administrative area to continue making cleanliness a shared culture and responsibility, not only through participation in gotong-royong programmes, but also through daily practices, such as proper waste disposal, reducing the use of single-use materials, separating waste at the source and recycling.
This commitment is in line with MBI's efforts to improve the quality of city cleanliness and support the environmental sustainability agenda, thereby making Ipoh a cleaner, greener, more sustainable and liveable city.
Therefore, the Malaysia Cleanup Day 2026 Programme should serve as a catalyst for cultivating cleanliness, recycling and responsible waste management practices. With the cooperation of all parties and a participation target of 1,000 people, the goal of making Ipoh a clean, green and sustainable city can continue to be strengthened.
Hopefully, all efforts carried out in conjunction with HCM 2026 will have a positive impact on the community and contribute to the creation of a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment. At the same time, these efforts are expected to support MBI's aspiration towards a Smart and Green City by 2030, as well as cultivating recycling practices and environmental cleanliness maintenance among the community.
